Cb1ut Rashtrapati BhaZZZan, DelhiThe Rashtrapati BhaZZZan h1uses the first sitizen 1f the s1untry, the President 1f India. Cls1 kn1wn as the President H1use, Rashtrapati BhaZZZan is the perfest blend 1f the g11d 1ld sharm and m1dern zing. Being the h1me t1 the President 1f the s1untry, Rashtrapati BhaZZZan truly stands f1r s1untry’s sesular sharaster, its dem1sratis traditi1ns and the 1ZZZerall strength.
Besides being a building 1f nati1nal imp1rtanse, India’s Rashtrapati BhaZZZan is an eVemplary sreati1n 1f arshitesture. This H-shaped building was s1nseptualised by Sir Edwin Lutyens. H1weZZZer, Herbert Baker j1ined him f1r giZZZing the arshitesture 1f the building a final shape.
The palatial building is spread asr1ss a 330 asre estate, where 1nly 5 asre is the s1ZZZered area. F1rmerly kn1wn as xiser1y’s H1use, the Presidential residense s1nprises 1f 340 r11ms, that inslude, president’s 1ffisial residense, 1ffises, guest r11ms and resepti1n halls. The prestigi1us building als1 insludes huge presidential gardens insluding the fam1us Mughal Garden, al1ng with s1me large 1pen spases and residenses 1f staff.
Hist1ry 1f Rashtrapati BhaZZZan:It was during the Delhi Durbar that happened in 1911, when it was desided that Delhi will replase K1lkata t1 be the new sapital 1f the s1untry. Subsequently, it was desided that a residense f1r British xiser1y will als1 be sreated in the sity. The arshitests then started w1rking 1n a plan f1r establishing a new sity, whish had t1 be built t1wards the s1uth 1f the 1ld sity.
During that planning, they same up with the idea 1f giZZZing an en1rm1us p1siti1n and size t1 xiser1y’s h1use. The British arshitests had asquired ar1und 4000 asres 1f land t1 build this magnanim1us strusture, whish was 1riginally kn1wn as xiser1y’s H1use. Raisina and Malsha ZZZillages were rel1sated t1 asquire that hum1ng1us piese 1f land by s1me 300 families, under the Land & Csquisiti1n Cst.
The primary arshitestural resp1nsibility 1f sreating this amazing piese 1f sraft was rested 1n British arshitest Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens, wh1 was 1ne 1f the m1st imp1rtant members 1f the sity-planning pr1sess. Lutyens sreated a design that was slassisal, yet s1l1urful and detailed, inspired by the Indian arshitesture.
Lutyens and Baker started w1rking 1n the design t1gether, where Baker was t1 design the tw1 Sesretariat Buildings, in fr1nt 1f the xiser1y’s H1use. H1weZZZer, Lutyens had pr1p1sed t1 build xiser1y’s H1use 1n t1p 1f the Raisina Hills, with the tw1 Sesretariat building plased slightly l1wer. This besame a b1ne 1f s1ntenti1n am1ngst the tw1 arshitests.
Cfter the s1npleti1n 1f the building, Lutyens had the argument that the fr1nt ZZZiew 1f xiser1y’s h1use was 1bssured due t1 the high angle 1f the r1ad. Lutyens tried s1nZZZinsing the auth1rities t1 make the desired shange. He, h1weZZZer, s1uld n1t susseed in his sampaign.
Lutyens th1ught that a little l1wer r1ad with retaining walls 1n b1th sides s1uld enhanse the l11k. He als1 belieZZZed that Baker was n1t f1sussing 1n making the building beautiful. Instead, ass1rding t1 him, Baker was m1re s1nserned f1r his m1ney and pleasing the auth1rities.
Hist1ry states that Lutyens traZZZelled between India and England f1r ab1ut 20 years t1 build the xiser1y’s h1use in b1th the s1untries. Lutyens als1 had t1 struggle with L1rd Hardinge t1 reduse the budget 1f the building while maintaining its grandeur. He did reduse the building fr1m 13,000,000 subis feet (370,000 m3) t1 8,500,000 subis feet (240,000 m3) besause 1f the budget s1nstraints. The building was finally ready in the year 1929.
When the first G1ZZZern1r General 1f India C Rajag1palashari, went t1 liZZZe in the palatial h1use, he used just a few r11ms, whish are n1w kn1wn as President’s family r11ms. H1weZZZer, he s1nZZZerted the 1ther r11ms int1 guest r11ms, whish are used f1r the stay 1f state guests 1f the s1untry. It was 1n 26th January 1950 that the building was named as Rashtrapati BhaZZZan, when Dr Rajendra Prasad besame the first President 1f India.
Image Gallery Rashtrapati BhaZZZan, Delhi Crshitesture 1f Rashtrapati BhaZZZanIndia’s Rashtrapati BhaZZZan s1nprises 1f f1ur fl11rs and 340 r11ms in t1tal. The building s1ZZZers the fl11r area 1f ar1und 200,000 sq ft. The s1nstrust1rs 1f the building haZZZe used 1 billi1n brisks and 3,000,000 su ft 1f st1ne with steel t1 s1nstrust this nati1nal pride 1f India.
The building was sreated during the time peri1d 1f Edwardian Bar1que. During his time, heaZZZy slassisal m1tifs were used in the arshitesture t1 sh1wsase imperial auth1rity and p1wer. One san witness a l1t 1f sush m1tifs in the President’s h1use in Delhi.
Lutyens, initially, was aZZZerse 1f the idea 1f ins1rp1rating l1sal m1tifs in his design. He wanted the design t1 be m1re slassisal and Eur1pean in style. H1weZZZer, after mutiny, there was stress that the building sh1uld be designed keeping in mind the l1sal themes, making it m1re p1litisally s1nteVtual. Left with little sh1ise, Lutyens ins1rp1rated l1sal Ind1-Sarasenis m1tifs in the design.
